Republicans to meet Central Bank in opening match

Mumbai: Bombay Republicans and Central Bank of India have the honour of setting the balls rolling in the Men’s Open category as they will clash in the opening match of the annual Mount Carmel Invitation Floodlit Rink Hockey Tournament.

Later, Companeroes SC take on Sea View SC in the second men’s encounter followed by the match between Rebels SC and Jablonski SC. Last year’s runners-up Central Railway will take on Rush Sc in the final match at 9.00pm on the first day of the 5-day tournament. The tournament will formally commence with the women’s match between Sea View SC and Halleys SC at 5.30 followed by the second women’s match between Western Railway and Valchandsons SC. This is a knockout tournament and each match will be played over a short 20 minute duration for women and veterans and 25 minute duration for men.

The champions and runners-up teams will be presented with trophies and cash awards. In addition there will be individual awards. Central Railway, Bombay Republicans, Companeroes SC, Sea View SC, SAISA, Ave Maria SC, Central Bank of India, Rebels SC, Jablonski SC, Rush SC, Mansi Foundation, Kalina Village Boys, Stanislaus SC, Dominic Savio SC, United Bandra SC and Mumbai Customs are the teams that will participate in the men’s event. The women’s draw will feature team like Central Railway, Western Railway, Valchandsons SC, Sea View SC, Hockey Lovers, Freunds SC, Halleys SC and Hugh Fernandes Academy.

Neel, Radhika  emerge top performers
 Hot favourite Khar Gymkhana’s Neel Roy swept the pool with a haul of five gold medals on the concluding day of the GMAAA Age Group Aquatic championships, held at Tata Swimming pool, Chembur.

In fact, out of five golds, Neel, who aggregated 35 points, set new marks in four – 50m, 100m and 200m  (all free style) and 100m backstroke, while the only event where he could not better the existing mark was the 200m individual medley. The top honours in the corresponding girls section went to Goregaon Sports Club’s Radhika Gawde, who aggregated 33 points with five golds.
