Maha CM launches logo for Tata Open Maharashtra tourney

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, launched the logo for the Tata Open Maharashtra which will be held in Pune from January 1 to 6, 2018.

World number six Marin Cilic, 2017 US Open finalist Kevin Anderson and big-serving Ivo Karlovic are the top players who would feature in the tournament, India's lone ATP World Tour event, to be held in Pune's Balewadi Sports Complex for the first time.

The qualifiers for the tournament, which has moved to Pune after being held in Chennai for 21 years, will be held on December 30 and 31. Tournament Director Prashant Sutar said the tennis stadium within the complex was being renovated at a cost of Rs 60-70 lakh. 'Asia's Tennis Best Academy', to be supported by Adar Poonawala for the next five years, would be announced during the ATP (tournament), Sutar said.

Somaiya ride to victory on Sagar Singh’s strike
Somaiya Sports Academy eked out a close 1-0 win against ICL Payyade SC in a keenly fought First Division match of the MDFA League  played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel. After a barren first half, striker Sagar Singh scored the lone goal in the 72nd minute to secure Somaiya’s victory.

Earlier, a spirited Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) held their nerves and showed loads of determination to defeat Tarun Sporting Club 4-3.
Consistent striker Eric Dowling scored in the second minute to put WCG ahead before Gleason Rodrigues struck twice in a space of as many minutes (24th and 28th minutes) to give Willingdon a solid 3-0 lead. However, Tarun Sporting fought back and managed to cut the deficit with Kaushal Meher scoring their first goal in the 38th minute as the first ended 3-1 in favour of Willingdon.

Castelino shines in Udaya’s easy win
Oliver Castelino’s brilliant two goals were the highlight of Udaya Sports Club’s facile 2-0 win against Jai Bharat Sports Club in a second round league match of the 22nd Late Shri Ramanath Payyade Memorial Football Tournament.

Udaya dominated play from the beginning and Castelino hit the target in the 15th minute to give his team a slender 1-0 half-time lead. The nippy striker Castelino doubled the lead with another strike in the 50th minute to seal the victory.

Aaqib nets hat-trick as Union Bank win big
Union Bank of India rode roughshod as they outplayed Mumbai Port Trust 6-1 in qualifying match of the MHAL organized 52nd Bombay Gold Cup Hockey Tournament.

The hero of Union Bank’s win was Aaqib Rahim who notched a fine hat-trick.  Prince Chaurasia, Nitin Kumar and Suraj Sahi netted one each to complete the margin of victory. Mumbai Port Trust pulled one back through Anil Haq.
