Deepa clinches 3rd Successive Asian Para Games Medal

Wednesday, October 10, 2018

Jakarta: India's Deepa Malik clinched the bronze medal in the women's F53/54 Javelin Throw event. This is her third successive Asian Para Games medal. Finishing behind Yang Liwan on China and Salehi Elham of Iran, both classified under the F54 category, Malik had the best throw amongst the F53 athletes.

In such cases when higher and lower disability categories are combined for competition, the points are calculated based on the RAZA point system, using coefficients based on the world records of each category.

With a throw of 10.15 M, Deepa Malik set a new personal best, also breaking the Asian Record as well as the Asian Para Games record in the F53 category. Incidentally, this throw also takes her past the 10M barrier set as the minimum qualification mark for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

She will now shift her focus towards the Women's Discus Throw F51/52/53 event to be held on 12th October 2018.

Consistently bettering her performances, even at the age of 48, Deepa Malik justifies the saying that 'Age is just a number'.
