Lampshades serve the dual purpose of providing effective lighting and also adding an element of chutzpah to your house

Every room in your home is enhanced with beautiful light and illumination from natural means like sunlight to artificial means such as lamps and lighting fixtures. When choosing the perfect lamps for your interiors do you ever consider what type of lampshade will look best with the setting? From pendant lampshade fixtures that hang above your dining room table to floor lamps that grace your favorite reading chair,  here’s an introduction to  different types of lampshades to help you choose the perfect one for your home.

Considering the variety of lampshades available in the market, one may feel overwhelmed by the prospect of choosing a shade for table, floor or ceiling light. Popularly used lampshades are made of handmade paper, stained glass and silks.

Options unlimited
Lampshades serve the dual purpose of providing effective lighting and also adding an element of chutzpah to your house. From the commonly known glass and silk lampshades, one can opt for unconventional stuff like hand painted lampshades, rawhide lampshades, beaded lampshades, chandelier clip-on lampshades for a different look and appeal. One can also go in for a customised designed lampshade to suit his requirements.

Lamp shades are available in a number of shapes and sizes. The shape of the lamp shade not only aesthetically completes a lamp but also defines its functionality. The basic type of lampshade stretches material between top and bottom wire circles of differing diameters. There are two basic types of lampshades: hardbacks and silks. They are available in a variety of shapes, styles and sizes. Hardback shades are made by laminating a chosen type of fabric or paper onto a plastic inner liner. Styles available in a hardback shade are rectangles, squares, drums, ovals, empires, coolies and hexagons. Hardback shades are less expensive than silk shades.

Silk shades
A misnomer, silk shades are not always made of silk. The shade is made of an inner fabric lining, usually white, and an outer fabric covering is stretched over a full wire frame. Silk shades are washable and have a longer life and require more labour to manufacture, so they are more expensive than hardback shades.
Hardback shades have exterior layer of folded fabric but an interior base of plastic that allows light to filter through. Silk lampshades, however, are entirely fabric and so more expensive.

Mumbai based interior designer Ajit Sawant says, “Amongst glass lamp shades, one of the most well known are Tiffany lampshades. These feature intricate designs created by soldering together a number of small pieces of coloured glass. These lamp shades are custom designed along with their bases and hence cannot be mixed and matched with other lamp bases”

Lampshades are mostly used to produce extensive lighting in a particular area. Mostly used in bedrooms and study tables, a lampshade provides aesthetic dimension to a place. By analysing the direction in which the light is emitted, one can distinguish the lampshades from the other.
