Colours define a house, and can make or break a space. Choosing appropriate colours for a facility’s spaces is an important aspect of interior design

Even if you have hired an interior designer, it’s good to know a few basics about colour as it affects people in many ways, depending on age, gender, ethnic background and climate. Certain colours tend to get a similar reaction from most people; the variations come from the shades or tones used. This is why it’s so important to choose colours wisely when it comes to decorating.

Let’s find out more about room colours and how they influence your mood:

  • There are varied colour schemes that one can use to change the environment from one room to other. Colour schemes like ‘powerful’ - having dark shades like black and red, ‘romantic’ - like pale pink, ‘calm’ - colours like light blue, ‘ocean’ - colours like light green and blue, ‘refreshing’ - colours having varied shades of water and pastel shades, are used to paint the rooms.
  • To begin with, let us understand that a room is divided into six surfaces; four walls, flooring and the ceiling. The four walls of the room have a major influence in enhancing the room décor.
  • A variety of colour schemes can be used for different rooms. The hall can be done up in simple shades of pastel colours, which are considered to be welcoming colours. The children’s room should have shades of yellow, orange and blue. Cartoon wallpapers can be used to further the liveliness of the kids’ room.
  • The master bedroom should be done up using rust colours or terracotta, which emit energy so that at the end of the day when you enter the room, it relaxes and refreshes you. A young girl’s room can have shades of olive green, lavender or some time pink also. The youth also prefer shades of blue turquoise and grey. If there is a room for senior citizens, the ideal colour would be white. A nice mythological painting can be put up on one of the walls to give it a warm look. Ideal colours for a kitchen are aquamarine, as they are very cool colours.
  • The flooring colour also plays an important role in enhancing the beauty of a room. Vitrified tiles have a shine, which adds to the beauty of the room. Vitrified tiles come in different colours. Ideally one should use light coloured tiles. Light colours are evergreen.
  • Different types of paints are available in the market, viz. paints, plastic emulsions, velvet touch, textured paints, stucco paints, two-tone paints, among others. Most of paints available in the market today are washable.
  • Lastly, a wall done up in less shades and good paintings displayed on it enhance the beauty of the room. If a room has very simple colours and is beautified with the help of artifacts and various decorative pieces, it looks classy and makes interior so perfect.
