How to keep your home clutter free

Living in a small flat can be quite a challenge and if you have children, things just keep on accumulating until the house feels unbearably crowded and small. However, the solution isn’t always buying a new, larger flat – with a bit of planning and space management you can once again recapture the comfortable home that you had originally purchased

  • Reorganising the interiors and eliminating clutter will make your house look cleaner and more spacious.

  • The first thing to do is to let go of unnecessary items. If there is something stored away that you haven't used in six months to a year, you probably won't use it again.

  • Consider multi-function furniture like futons or sofa-cum-beds that can serve as a couch during the day and a bed at night.  It’s better to keep a few large pieces of furniture rather than numerous small items. Small furniture does not make the room appear bigger.

  • Bolder pieces of furniture draw the eye to them creating the illusion of a bigger room.

  • Then sort out the kitchen. Minimise counter clutter by keeping only those appliances that are used at least every couple of days on top. Maximise the space in your cabinets by installing small hooks on the bottoms of shelves for mugs. Put frequently used items like kids' snacks on lower shelves. You can also use baskets to neatly arrange fruit or other healthy snacks on the kitchen counter or table. It will look great and keep healthy snacks a focal point.

  • Have a plan. Make a to-do list for each room and stick to it. Start by cleaning up places where dust accumulates unnoticed. It lurk in all kinds of places that you never think of, such as the surface of your front door and grills, hinged edges of cupboard doors, the tops of ceiling fan blades the insides of light fixtures.

  • Go through the drawers of your cupboards and wall units. Take everything out and throw away things that are broken, dried up. Use drawer dividers to group similar items together.

  • Light is important in a small room. Try having a big mirror opposite the window to reflect light into the room. Also, try to keep the fabrics used in the room a light color. Remember that dark colours absorb light and light colours reflect light.
