Whether it is a particular theme décor or a balance of traditional and contemporary or simply a mix match without being conscious about any particular style, selecting accessories and placing them right can make a world of a difference to your homes

Picture the bare walls of your house with just few pieces of furniture strewn around, but without any add on or enhancers. Now, think how you can recreate the same space by accentuating or complimenting it with accessories and elements tomake it appearmore enhancing and completely change the feel of the room, even though minimalist in looks. Here are some guidelines with the help of which you can recreate your home interior

Style is all about a home and how one could recreate it using a few individualistic touches, yet ensuring some sort of connection between the components like hues and textures, furniture and accessories. Styling a home with a particular theme décor is more difficult and is all about obtaining the right elements to the last detail in place to visualise that theme. Wooden or marble topped consoles with carved brass framed mirror above or more simply series of open display shelves with collectors items, candelabras and crystal, armoires to display dishes & object-d-art complementing the heavy classic furniture, carpets and the cut glass chandeliers, besides few large landscapes and portraits reflect a 'Period" style while the more rustic pine or oak furniture with its knotty nuances coupled with wrought iron pieces are the way to go for a Mediterranean theme. Besides stone walls, white is a predominant colour in this decor with mosaics incorporated in formof wallmotifs. Terracotta pots, porcelain vases, largemetal urns with foliage to ceramic dishes displayed on the walls will help in accessorising in this style.

Though most theme décors have a limited use, today’s trend and changing attitude of pick-what-appeals has almost resulted in mix-match of ethnic and contemporary styles in most home. With this style a blend of informal set of furniture in wrought iron or cane for a casual feel to the more chic or funky styled ones in wood, steel, and glass is best suited. Nothing needs to be perfectly matched or symmetrical as it defines a relaxed feel. Use corners of the room effectively with displays either with tall glass or porcelain vases placed on the floor along with foliage and plants or brass statues and figurines.

One of most inexpensive and creative ways of designing a wall is hanging dinner plates on it. It is an amazing way of decorating your home especially when you are running out of budget. To get this done, all you need to do is take out some dinner plates from your kitchen. Fix the D-ring picture hangers on the back of your plates and nail it directly on the wall in your favourite pattern or design.

Highlight certain walls with bold colours or use textured surfaces so as to create a focal point. Drapes could be of neutral shade either in stripe or gold print depending on the wall colour. Bring in a cultural influence by providing a low Indian style sitting. Displays by way of open shelves for crystal and ceramic artifacts or curious to wall hangings in porcelain and terracotta will create a mixed effect.

No doubt vibrant colours on certain planes are the best way to create an impact or accentuate and give a feel of warmth along with white, earth colours like terracotta, brick, golden yellow or greens over large surfaces will reflect a rustic or a traditional feel along with the rough stone floors and wooden beams. Textures by way of rough-cast stucco with or without motifs on a particular surface will lend character to the space and elements around, while double-toned hues on walls with appropriate lighting will give a wash down effect. The changing trend in interiors saw metallic colours like gold, silver or bronze being used freely to highlight details.

For upholstery and tapestry which could be either cotton, silk or heavy velvet be careful not to overpower the rich colours of the walls unless they are white pastels where one could experiment it vice-versa. Choosing plains, stripes or hand block-prints for drapes or upholstery depends on the décor style andwhat complements it best.

Many designers suggest investing in solid antique pieces to give your space a sense of history that can forever be expanded onto. Antique furniture, even though reflective of the past, becomes timeless when incorporated with other styles and furnishings.
