Handy tips for crockery care at home

  • Most chinaware can be put in the dishwasher provided certain precautions are taken such as using detergents that are specially formulated to protect fine tableware with exception of hand-painted and antique pieces. Check if it is labelled as dishwasher safe.

  • In case of hand washing, do not use abrasive materials as they may damage the surface.

  • Line the bottom of sink with a thin sheet of sponge or thick towel, while washing delicate and costly glassware and crockery. This will avoid any drastic mishaps of breakage.

  • Add a tsp. each, of salt and vinegar to soap water for washing crystals and crockery to make them crystal clean and sparkling.

  • Use a plastic washing-up bowl to prevent knocking crockery on the sink itself.

  • After washing, rinse each piece in clear, warm water, drain, and then dry and polish with a soft tea towel.

  • Use a soft brush or a cloth to clean your crockery regularly, first with a damp cloth and then with a dry one.

  • Never expose fine bone china to a naked flame or to sudden temperature change, such as washing a hot plate in cold water.

  • Cups should be stored rim down. Do not stack or hang them as this can weaken their handles.

  • Do not slide plates one over the other as this may scratch the glaze. Plates are best stored with paper or tissue between them to avoid scratching.

  • Do not stack-wet pieces on top of each other because the footing is often unglazed and may scratch the piece that is underneath.
