An Ancient Indian Folk Art
The Warli tribe is one of the largest in India, located around Mumbai's Navapada in Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali. Despite being close to one of the largest cities in India, the Warli reject much of contemporary culture.
The Warli culture is centered around the concept of Mother Nature and elements of nature are often focal points depicted in the Warli painting. Farming is their main way of life and a large source of food for the tribe. However, lack of regular artistic activity explains the traditional tribal sense of style for their paintings. Warli Painting is a traditional knowledge and cultural intellectual property preserved across generations.

Warli painting showcases the culture of the tribe. However, these painting which were only done as a cultural activity with respect for nature and wildlife, seem to be entering the business mode with several seekers for this artwork.
The Afternoon Despatch & Courier's photographer Trupti Arekar explores the various forms of this ancient Indian folk art.
