Monsoon likely to hit Kerala on June 4
New Delhi:
Monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on June 4, marking the official commencement of the rainy season in the country, private weather forecaster Skymet said yesterday. The normal onset date for monsoon over Kerala is June 1. "All the four regions are going to witness lesser than normal rainfall, this season. East and Northeast India and central parts will be poorer than Northwest India and South Peninsula. Onset of monsoon will be around June 4. It seems that initial advancement of monsoon over peninsular India is going to be slow," Skymet CEO Jatin Singh said.

Curfew relaxed in Assam's violence-hit Hailakandi
Hailakandi (Assam):
Curfew in violence- hit Hailakandi district was yesterday relaxed from 7 am till midnight following improvement in situation, an official order by the Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said here. Night curfew, however, will remain in force for eight to 10 days. Banks, markets, educational institutions and government offices remained open and public and private vehicles were seen plying on the roads during the relaxation period, officials added.

'Fani had longest life span among tropical cyclones'
Bhubaneswar:
Cyclone 'Fani', which pulverized parts of coastal Odisha on May 3, had the longest life span among tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal, an eminent meteorologist said yesterday. "The elongated time period of the extremely severe cyclonic storm continued for eleven days in the sea and land put together and had the longest life span ever observed in the Bay of Bengal," said S C Sahu, former Director of the Meteorological Centre here.

NCW calls for action against Hapur gang rape accused
New Delhi:
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has directed the Uttar Pradesh DGP to take strict and immediate action against the accused in the reported gangrape of a domestic help, who later set herself on fire. The woman, who was "sold" for Rs 10,000 and raped by the people for whom she was forced to work as domestic help, set herself afire after the Uttar Pradesh Police officials allegedly refused to register her complaint.

Police constable's wife raped in Rajasthan
Jaipur:
A police constable's wife was allegedly raped by a man in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan, police said yesterday. The woman alleged that the accused Suresh clicked objectionable pictures of her and was blackmailing and raping her for the last four months, SHO of Kotwali Police Station Chandman said.
