Parrikar returns to Goa after treatment in US
Panaji:
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar returned Thursday evening to Panaji from the US, where he had gone for medical treatment in the last week of August. Parrikar, 62, arrived at Goa airport around 5.30 pm by a regular flight from Mumbai, where he had landed in the afternoon on his return journey from the US, an official in his office said. He was seen walking out of the airport building before driving off. Parrikar underwent treatment in the US for a pancreatic ailment for nearly three months earlier this year.

MP: Ex-MLA quits BJP against restoring Atrocities Act
Bhopal:
Former MLA Laxman Tiwari Thursday announced his resignation from the Madhya Pradesh BJP in protest against restoration of provisions of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, on a day of Bharat bandh over the issue. Earlier this year, the supreme court had removed the strict provision of mandatory arrests under the Act. As the decision triggered nationwide protests by Scheduled Castes organisations, the Centre brought an amendment to the Act during the Monsoon Session to overrule the SC order. Organisations opposing restoration of the SC/St Act are observing a nationwide shutdown Thursday. Criticising the amendments brought to the Act, Tiwari said it was "atrocious" to send people to jail merely on the basis of suspicion.

FIR against Goa power minister's brother
Panaji:
Brother of Goa Power Minister Pandurang Madkaikar has been booked on charge of assaulting a local panchayat representative, the police said Wednesday. Panchayat member of Old Goa, Nilkant Bhomkar, has lodged an FIR against Dhaku Madkaikar, the younger brother of Madkaikar Tuesday evening, a police official said. Bhomkar claimed that when he was getting out of the panchayat hall after attending a meeting of tribal bodies, he was stopped by Madkaikar and his cousin Mahesh Pilgaonkar and was beaten up.

"They were alleging that I had disrespected the minister during the meeting because of which they were upset with me," Bhomkar stated.
