Govt draft ordinance to overturn SC verdict
Government has initiated inter-ministerial consultations on a draft ordinance to overturn a Supreme Court verdict that put safeguards on arrest of those accused of committing atrocities on SCs and STs, official sources said today. A draft is ready with the Ministry of Social Justice and it could be placed before the Union Cabinet in coming days if the government's review plea before the Supreme Court fails to yield a favourable ruling. "The next hearing is on May 16 and much would depend on that," said a senior official in the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry.

BJP's JK unit opposes Mehbooba's demand for ceasefire during Ramzan
BJP's Jammu and Kashmir unit today opposed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's call for a unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramzan till completion of the Amarnath Yatra claiming such a step was not at all in "national interest". The party's state unit said militants were demoralised due to Army action and a unilateral ceasefire would ease pressure and allow them to re-energise.Referring to an all party meeting held yesterday, BJP state unit's chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said an opinion came up during the discussion for a unilateral ceasefire on the lines of one declared by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

JK police expands probe in Kathua rape and murder case to Meerut
The Jammu and Kashmir police crime branch has expanded its probe in the Kathua rape and murder case to identify those who allegedly signed the attendance register at a Meerut college on behalf of an accused while he had gone to his village where the crime was committed, officials said here today.  They said a crime branch team was camping in Meerut and taking inputs from the local police there.  The police team has examined some of the witnesses as it is alleged in the charge sheet that Vishal Jangotra, accused of raping an eight-year-old girl in Kathua, had tried to create an alibi of his absence from the crime scene by allegedly "resorting to manipulation of records and creation of false evidence with the connivance and assistance of his father Sanji Ram".

Rahul attacks PM for not holding presser in 4 years
Congress President Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not holding any press conference in the last four years.  Gandhi took to Twitter saying he enjoyed meeting the regional and national media at his "packed" press conference in Bengaluru and then took a jibe at the prime minister.
