Wedding Wows

Monday, September 11, 2017

We’re slowly gearing up for the most awaited season — wedding season! In the first of a two-part series, Gurjyot Kaur & Khevna Pandit tell you about the stores you simply must visit when shopping for your bridal trousseau

It’s that time of the year again. If you can hear wedding bells ringing, you’re not the only one. As the monsoons make their way out, a spirit of liveliness and pomp takes over us just as we enter the last third of the year. And, if you’re a bride-to-be, you may have already begun scouting for the perfect wedding lehenga. For those of you who haven’t, there’s nothing to worry about because you reside in the city of dreams. Yes, with some of the best designers right here, Mumbai has a few stores that will make your wedding dreams come true. Whether it is embroidery work, mirror detailing or even lace borders that you crave, there’s something for everyone. Since we’re often spoilt for choice in the city, we’ve brought you a list of bedazzling stores that we’ve visited in the past year and tell you what we love about them. Add these to your checklist right away!

Ritu Kumar is undoubtedly the queen of the Indian fashion industry. Her creations have always been par excellence and offer the right fusion of sophistication and euphoria. Her designs are a mix of contemporary styles and age-old Indian tradition, and her bridal collections feature rich fabrics such as crepe, georgette and silk — charming yet comfortable. We love that her designs are wearable and versatile. Her bridal wear can make any girl look stunning on her big day.

Tarun Tahiliani is one of Bollywood’s favourite designers. Shilpa Shetty wore an outfit from the talented designer for her wedding; Oprah Winfrey wore one when she came to Indian in 2011; and Aishwarya Rai also turned to him for her gown at the Cannes Film Festival. His bridal collections are made of dreams and are to-die-for. His work is characteristic and differs from that of other designers — you can distinguish a Tarun Tahiliani design from others very easily. His designs, though traditional, have a very international appeal to them. His wedding collections are priced a little high, but the appeal and finesse of his creations are worth every penny. And, his designs featuring elements of brocade and velvet can make any bride look majestic!

Payal Singhal, the fashion house established in 1999, has a signature collection of contemporary Indian clothing. With a traditional approach to design and aesthetics, each ensemble is curated with a global outlook and her designs tells a story of beauty and elegance. The designs have an essence of earthy life in India, while infusing a contemporary and stylish appeal. Payal Singhal’s designs are playful and gorgeous. So, whether you are a bride or the sister of the bride, a Payal Singhal wedding lehenga would make you look stunning.

SVA is the labour of love by Sonam and Paras Modi. It was borne out of a passion for heritage, colour and craftsmanship and that’s reflected in each of its collections. SVA designs have intricate detailing and use luxurious fabrics. It is perfect if you are the type who appreciates craftsmanship with a vibrant and strong Indian aesthetic. And, we are fans of SVA floor-length Anarkalis. Men can also find printed kurtas, embellished velvet stoles, sherwanis and more in their new collection. Young, vibrant and head-turning traditional fashion is how they define their signature style and we couldn’t agree more. If you’re looking for elaborate handcrafted designs, then their exceptional styling will certainly interest you.

If dressing up like a diva is something you love doing, then you should add the Jhelum Fashion House to your list. Acing the store-in-store concept, Jhelum is vast and has enough dedicated space for each of the many designers they house. We love that they have a private bridal studio too. The store features some of India’s most established designers including Varun Bahl, Rina Dhaka and Manav Gangwanim, and has some of the most beautiful ivory lehengas on display. It also offers some of the best makeup artists and various experts from the wedding industry to make you look your best on your big day.

Where: Kamla Spaces, B. M. Bhargav Road, Opposite Khira Industrial estate, Santacruz (w)

Kalki is a brand synonymous with elegant fashion, which throws up new designs and collections throughout the year. And the brand knows exactly what brides, and women in general, are looking for in wedding attire. Bridal lehengas form the most important part of any bride’s Indian wedding plan and Kalki offers an array of contemporary and ethnic Indian styles. The best part is that it features ready-to-wear fashion as well as designer wear that can be customised. Whether you’re looking for a red lehenga with heavy detailing or a light floral designer lehenga, Kalki is the store at which you’ll find it.
