2016 was a great year for fashion in the sense that we saw a few iconic brands join forces to create masterpieces. Khevna Pandit talks about a few of her favourite designer collaborations
The phrase, ‘It takes two to tango’, is the perfect fit for fashion — and that’s exactly how designers in 2016 created some of our favourite collections of the year. There was no dearth of brand collaborations, and there were quite a few that became worldwide trends in little to no time. While it may involve a big effort for designers to come up with new trends every now and then, collaboration does make the process simpler (and of course, better for us!). It took us a while trying to pick out our favourites from a wide variety, but here are some that stood out in 2016. We also tell you what we loved about them, just in case you’re curious.
BRAND COLLABORATIONS WE LOVE
Kenzo + H&M
2016 gave us H&M, but it didn’t stop there. We also got a brand new collection with Kenzo + H&M, and we couldn’t be happier! The key print with this collection was the iconic tiger stripe, which made an appearance everywhere, from rollneck tops to high-waisted leggings. We loved the oversized winter collection as well, of course (even though we’re not treated to enough of a chill to sport it in the city). Kenzo designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon promised us fun and femininity embroidered in embellishments — and that’s exactly what we got!
Vans + Toy Story
Vans, the original action sports footwear and apparel brand, surprised us with a nostalgic collection that featured Disney’s Toy Story in 2016. The brand successfully revisited the dynamics between the film’s leading characters in a fresh collection of footwear, apparel and accessories. Fans can freak out and pick their favourites shoes and accessories — whether it is Buzz Lightyear’s tonal space suit or Woody’s iconic cowboy boots. We couldn’t be more thrilled!
Tommy x Gigi
When internationally renowned American fashion designer brand Tommy Hilfiger collaborated with supermodel Gigi Hadid, the internet had a meltdown. During the fashion show, which was held in September, the brand showcased a special collection featuring Gigi sporting the chic and stylish collection. Seafaring staples were reimagined with clean cuts and fresh embellishments, from buttons and chevrons to naval badges, embroidery and sailor stripes. Sporty-chic silhouettes were made more contemporary with feminine chiffon, cosy cable-knits and sleek leather. The look is effortless, youthful and cool, and it portrays Gigi’s take on the nautical with a playful, yet romantic edge.
Good Earth x Rohit Bal
India’s leading design house, Rohit Bal, surprised us with a special home and apparel capsule collection to celebrate the festivities of 2016. Known as Husn-e-Taairaat, this indigenous collection is a collaboration with Good Earth and it epitomises nature, wildlife, beauty and a love for Persian arts. We love how it reflects Mughal history while celebrating their unique design expressions. It flaunts collectibles and accent pieces in décor and dining and has fine artwork decals on bone china, ceramic and glass in vibrant shades of royal blue, jade and ivory.
Fenty x Puma
We need no introduction to this trend. The independent popstar fused her approach to fashion with her love for Japanese street culture to give the sports brand a snazzy new makeover. The new collection by Rihanna and Puma is a fun amalgamation of bold and fearless styles — with a hint of unpredictability. We can’t get enough of it!
