If yellowing, plaque and coffee marks on your teeth are making you conscious about your smile, this article is for you. Jeet Dalvi tells you how to get rid of and prevent those unsightly spots and stains
It’s impossible not to be self conscious when your body goes through physical changes, and unfortunately for us, these continue to occur at every stage of our lives. Since your smile frames your face, taking care of your teeth should be a priority, but with bad lifestyle habits and the consumption of all the coffee you need to get through a busy day at work, they usually get dull and stained over time. With recent advancements in cosmetic dentistry, we can breathe a slight sigh of relief; that brilliant white smile isn’t so far out of reach any more! But, are there home remedies that you can use to keep your smile bright without going to the dentist? Switch up your lifestyle habits with some of our tips, and then read on to see how to keep your teeth stain free.
AVOID THE STAIN
Use a straw
Using a straw can keep stains at bay. It helps the liquid bypass the visible front surfaces of your teeth and although it’s not a foolproof method (and could lead to weight gain if you use it too much), it’s a good way to get started.
Anti-bacterial mouthwash is a good idea
Simply rinsing after brushing your teeth in the morning won’t help keep stains at bay. Practice good dental hygiene by brushing, flossing and then rinsing your mouth with anti-bacterial mouthwash in order to fight against and prevent the occurrence of these stains.
Add milk to your tea and coffee
Adding milk to your daily cup of tea or coffee decreases direct exposure to the caffeine that stains your teeth. Of course, don’t overdo the dairy either!
Chewing gum may help
All chewing gum may not be good for you, but some types of dental gum can help keep your teeth in good condition. Gum has been claimed to help remove the plaque that accumulates near the root of your teeth, which otherwise causes decay.
This should be an obvious one, but we’re going to add it in any way. Not only is it terrible for your health, it will also affect your teeth, whether you’re chewing it or smoking.
TRY THESE REMEDIES
Looking for quick home hacks to brighten your teeth before your next visit to the dentist? These tricks may be able to help you out.
Did you know that strawberries contain an acid called malic acid, which helps bleach stained teeth? Some of our favourite toothpaste contains this acid as a component too. The fibre in strawberries acts as an organic scrub, eliminating micro-organisms that invade your oral cavity after your meals and tea or coffee drinking sessions. Follow these steps to find out how to use this hack:
Cut the strawberry in two halves and use the flat surface to brush over your teeth and jaw, inside and out.
Grind the strawberries until they turn into a red paste. Use the paste to brush your teeth with your toothbrush. Do this for a minute and you will see the difference.
Soon after using the strawberry on your teeth, use toothpaste to brush your teeth to avoid letting the fruit settle on it as it could lead to cavities.
Use plain water to rinse your mouth, gargling for around five minutes.
Coconut oil contains lauric acid. This is an agent that helps break down the bacteria that is responsible for yellowing teeth. Follow the steps below to use the oil as a tooth whitener.
Remember that coconut oil has the ability to strengthen your teeth as well as remove floss that accumulates after a meal. It also nourishes your teeth and helps with the ability to fight bacteria. The good news is that you can use this whitening method several times a week because there aren’t any side effects.
To get white teeth naturally, soak a clean piece of cloth in edible coconut oil.
Use this to rub your teeth and repeat the procedure every day until the desired results are achieved.
