Love Yourself

While chasing deadlines, pleasing people and catching up on your favourite shows, the need for self care is often pushed to the end of our to-do lists. If you think it’s high time you changed that way of living, Pearl Mathias has ten easy things you can do

With the humdrum nature of daily life, caring for ourselves often takes a backseat. While racing against the clock, rushing to meet deadlines and struggling to please the people around us, we somehow tend to forget about ourselves. And, the more you ignore self care, the less happy you will be about your life, your work and your relationships. You’ll find yourself fatigued more often than usual, you’ll fall prey to recurring headaches and you won’t be able to recollect the last time you saw your friends. If you notice these signs cropping up already, you know it’s time to pay attention to yourself. Here are ten ways you can practise self care through the day.

Sort your schedule

While chalking out your to-do list each day, set aside some time for yourself. This shouldn’t involve any form of work. This ‘me time’ is essential for you to simply sit back with a cup of warm tea and soak in the feeling of just being, without doing.

Unplug for happiness

There will always be something that needs your attention, but pick a day and consciously choose to place all your devices aside and not be bothered by work. After the initial anxiety passes, you’ll enjoy the peace of mind that follows.

Boost your energy

Whether you’re a homemaker, a freelancer or a business person, it’s essential to make some time during the day to stay energised. Pick a sport, go for a walk or join a gym — whatever you choose, make sure to commit to doing it every day.

Write and release

Take some time at the end of each day to make a note of the daily happenings. The taunts of an unpleasant co-worker may be lingering in your mind. Instead of going to bed with a head heavy with thoughts, express your feelings in words, on the page.

Pamper your senses

Don’t save the pampering for the festive season alone. Schedule an appointment at a salon at least once every two weeks. If you’re feeling indulgent, book a spa session for complete rejuvenation. If you can’t do that, take a relaxing bath each evening to unwind and let the stress of the day melt away.

Savour your meals

Instead of multi-tasking during mealtime, make a conscious effort to put away all distractions and simply focus on the food in front of you. Initially it may seem like time wasted, but once you make it a habit, you’ll see the joy of indulging in a meal without any unnecessary distractions.

Bring back the good old days

Remember those things you were so fond of when you were little? Watching cotton candy being spun, picking daisies off the sidewalk, trying to make patterns from the stars in the sky. Treat your inner child to these simple joys that are sure to warm your heart as you reminisce and bask in old memories.

Don’t stop creating

You may love to bake brownies or knit quilts; you may enjoy creating artistic décor or writing poetry. Take some time to do whatever makes your soul feel alive. In the middle of a work day or early morning on the weekends, make time at least once a week to create something yourself.

Surround yourself with your loved ones

Even amidst the bustle of daily life, the people who really matter will find a way to make time for you. This doesn’t mean that you should wait for them to make plans. Initiate dinner dates, group gatherings or even Skype calls with your friends to stay abreast of what’s happening in their lives.

Cultivate a happy attitude of gratitude

Self care starts with cultivating a grateful attitude, in times when things are going our way as well as when they aren’t. Being thankful for all the things that come your way helps you see every situation not as a setback, but one to learn from and grow.
