HOW THE COOKIE CRUMBLES

Sweetish House Mafia opens its doors at a new location. Aakriti Patni visits to try and understand the cookie craze that the brand has got up and running

Having had its start from the back of a Tata Nano, this cookie shop has come a long way. From one small kiosk to seven cafés today, Sweetish House Mafia has won the hearts of many with their delicious, gooey chocolate concoctions. Their new outlet is a quaint little cookie shop, tucked away among the busy shops and lanes of Kemps Corner. Dropping in for an evening of sweet treats, we found ourselves in cookie heaven, and, needless to say, we stuffed ourselves with cookies and more!

In keeping with the brand’s tradition, the new outlet follows the blue and white theme, which creates a cosy and rustic vibe. The day we chose to visit the café was a miserable one, filled with rain and stormy winds. We found a sanctuary in SHM — with its white brick walls, plush sofas, decorative wall hangings and low ceilings — where we could be warm and snug with chocolate by our side! These standalone outlets of SHM want to prove that they’re not just cookie spots, but one-stop destinations for your sweet fix. With sundaes, shakes, aromatic coffee and teas, they don’t just offer a range of cookies, but a plethora of options to satisfy you.

The journey curated by SHM pairs different beverages with cookies, creating a pocketful of flavours for you to sink into. And, it seemed only fitting to begin our sojourn with the very cookie that started it all, the Nutella Sea Salt (Rs 149). A ball of Nutella wrapped in cookie dough and baked to perfection, this is what chocolate lovers’ dreams are made of. But, it isn’t an overwhelming rush of sugar that hits you. The sweetness of Nutella is balanced with fresh sea salt. Sprinkled with sea salt, the cookie is delicious, even if you aren’t fond of the chocolate spread, Nutella.

A cookie for those who aren’t fans of chocolate (yes, such people do exist!), the Snickerdoodle (Rs 99) paired with Apple Cinnamon Tea (Rs 120) is a winner. Crunchy yet chewy, the cookie was a combination of sweet and spicy flavours, while the tea enhanced the flavour of the cinnamon present in both. Next, we were presented with the classic Chocolate Chip Cookie (Rs 99) with cold milk. Dunking the warm cookie in the cold milk, it simply melted in our mouths. We would definitely come back only for these warm chocolate chip cookies!

The Double Chocolate Chip Cookie (Rs 99), however, was not met with the same reaction. Served with a Vanilla Tea (Rs 120), the cookie did not send us into the chocolate paradise of our dreams. We expected it to be laden with chocolate goodness, but the cookie was a disappointment and the tea did nothing to mask that. The Oatmeal and Cranberry Cookie (Rs 99) is a good choice if you’re looking for something crunchy and not too sweet. It’s an apt choice, for a sweet yet healthy fix.  But despite being wooed with different teas and cookie combinations, the Cookie Slab (Rs 149) remains our favourite. A chunk of melted chocolate chips on a crispy, crunchy base, we could never ask for more!

While we could drone on about our cookie filled journey, we’re sure you get the picture. Whether you choose to pick up a quick cookie to munch on or enjoy a leisurely sip of coffee with cookies, Sweetish House Mafia is a place you’ll see yourself frequenting, more often than not, for a chocolate fix!
