We don’t need to go on about how healthy the nutrient-packed egg is, but do you know how helpful it can be for your beauty regime? Khevna Pandit brings you ten ways to make it your favourite beauty ingredient

Protein-packed and delicious, eggs are a staple in wholesome breakfasts, especially since the powerful super food contains an excellent dose of nourishment, not just for your body, but for your skin and hair as well. You’re no stranger to the age-old beauty fix of using egg yolk on your hair, and even though it smells awful, it serves as the perfect conditioner. Rich in lutein (a deep yellow pigment found in the leaves of plants and, of course, egg yolks), eggs provide hydration and elasticity, and help in tissue repair too. If you’re unsure about how to get started with the ingredient, here are ten ways to go about it.

FOR YOUR HAIR
Eggs are a boon to damaged hair. Hair is about 70% keratin, and eggs help to restore this content by rebuilding and fixing damaged strands. Unlike all the expensive shampoos that are available today, you don’t need to pick a different blend for different hair types! Simply whip up some egg yolk and use a spatula to layer it on your hair. Repeat this routine daily for soft and silky hair.

AS A DEEP CONDITIONER
If you thought that the best use of eggs was in a shampoo, you should know that they have nourishing qualities that make your hair look healthier and happier after a quick condition too. When you mix them with yoghurt, they make the perfect conditioner. Break two eggs into a bowl and add 2tbsp of fresh unflavoured yoghurt. Leave it on as a hair mask for around 30 minutes and then wash it off with cool water. You will notice the sheen as soon as you do.

FOR YOUR SKIN
Because of its deep nourishing properties, eggs can also be used to improve the texture of your skin. Egg yolks are rich in certain fatty acids, which lend moisture to dry and damaged skin. They also help tighten pores and remove excessive oil. If you have dry skin issues, apply a mixture of egg and honey to your face and rinse it off after a few minutes.

FOR YOUR EYES
Egg white is an essential ingredient for those who want tauter skin. It also helps to cure under-eye puffiness. All you need to do is apply a thin layer of egg white under your eyes and leave it on for about 10 minutes. Wash it off with water to see the swelling subside almost instantly.

AS A BODY SCRUB
Eggs can naturally revitalise and exfoliate your skin. Prepare a DIY body scrub by blending two hard boiled eggs into a fine powder and mix this with 2tbsp of honey and a pinch of salt to make a thick paste. Using a loofah, rub a small amount of this paste on your skin daily. This scrub will gently cleanse dry skin cells, leaving you with glowing skin.

FOR REVITALISED NAILS
Yes, eggs can help cracked or brittle nails as well. Soak your fingernails in a mixture that includes a quarter cup of warm milk and two egg yolks (for 10 minutes) and rinse it off with cold water. This blend helps your nails grow faster and provides nourishment for your cuticles. It also strengthens your nails and reduces brittleness and splitting.

AS AN EYELASH ENHANCING SERUM
What if we told you that eggs can help your eyelashes grow faster? Add glycerine and olive oil to egg whites and mix well. Use a clean, unused mascara wand to gently sweep this paste on to the base of your eyelashes. Repeat this three times and leave it on for an hour before rinsing it off with cool water. This serum helps your lashes grow faster, prevents breakage and makes them appear thicker.

TO TREAT DARK CIRCLES
Get rid of pesky dark circles and wrinkles with an egg white mask. Break an egg and separate the yolk. Dip a soft makeup brush into the mixture and dab it under your eyes. Once it dries completely, rinse it off with cool water. The vitamins and proteins in the mixture help lighten dark circles.

TO REMOVE BLACKHEADS
To remove those nasty blackheads on your face in a jiffy, cleanse your face and rub a slice of lemon on the affected areas. Then, apply a layer of egg white and immediately cover the area with tissue paper. Repeat the process once. Leave it on for around 20 minutes or until it dries and then peel off the tissue paper.

TO WHITEN YOUR TEETH
There’s nothing more disheartening than having yellow teeth. Spruce up your pearly whites with this quick fix. Remove the shells from hard boiled eggs and set them aside to dry. Once they’ve dried out completely, use this powder with your toothpaste to brush your teeth. Eggshells are a natural source of calcium and can rebuild teeth that are prone to abrasion.
