Government eating its own words

Friday, April 06, 2018

Fake news issue created more furore as Prime Minister took stock of the situation and ordered his minister's order to be withdrawn with immediate effect. It is good that the central government has withdrawn the order on "fake news" reporters at the direction of the Prime Minister. But, there must be some checks and balances including deterrent action against the massive abuse of the media - both the owners of the media personnel. It has become common that people are supporting the media to promote their personal and business interests. Similarly, a section of the media personnel have been abusing their profession for their personal interests. The Press Council of India and the media unions ought to have taken any positive actions to curb the malpractices. Thus gagging the media is bad and at the same time abuse by the media is equally deplorable. Fake news with no base is nothing, but like committing a murder. Hence needs to be punished severely.
