BMC must act fast

Friday, May 11, 2018

BMC has taken tree audit in right earnest and hoped to complete the task in 15 days' time. It is indeed a reality check for the city's corporation after facing flak for the increasing number of deaths owing to free fall of trees during the monsoon season. When crores of rupees are spent on other issues, the tree fall attracted an early attention this time and needs to be appreciated. After pothole problems and building fall during the wet season, we come across trees falling on human beings and on the cars and other vehicles parked on the roadside making the situation most fatal and dangerous. The shoddy work came to light during the first rains in June last year. Instead of passing the blame on road users, BMC should act prudently this year. Public is paying tax and hence we expect better conditions of the road during the four months of monsoon season and thereafter also. It is time to see that the trees are pruned up well in advance to avoid further disaster on the roads. BMC's rain check is a welcome one and if given priority the trimming of trees will be over in record time and many avoidable casualties can be prevented.
