Safeguard your arteries

Ayurvedic principles can help you maintain heart health, says Mohammad Yusuf N Shaikh

Coronary artery barrier/blockage is one of the most common heart diseases and the reason for premature death. Heart muscles require a regular blood supply, oxygen molecules and nutrients, to work on a regular basis. Coronary arteries are those that supply blood to the heart muscles. Any obstruction in the coronary artery stops the supply of blood in the heart muscle. This barrier occurs due to the formation of cells, fats and cholesterol, which is called plaque. Any obstruction in the arteries causes heart disease, so it is crucial that we take care of the well-being and health of our arteries.

Healthy diet

Ayurveda has always divided the human heart into two halves—the physical soul and emotional heart. To live our life, it is essential for both of our hearts to be healthy.  Thus, it is necessary for the arteries to be healthy and to take care of them.

The most important thing is that we pay attention to our diet. According to Ayurveda, restrict yourself to consume only a handful portion of your meal. Eat meals on time and regularly. By eating food at regular times, your digestive system works adequately. Avoid junk food and fried food; instead settle for roasted items.

Consumption of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables is extremely important. Eat raw and fresh food items by starting your day with apple or pear for a healthy artery. It is necessary to include soaked almonds in your diet. Instead of cooking vegetables for long, garnish them with fresh lemon juice. Grind spices, such as black pepper and turmeric, which keep the arteries healthy.

Antioxidant-rich pomegranate and broccoli are beneficial to ensure blood flow in the body. The use of pomegranate helps in the opening of the arteries and protects them from being damaged.

Olive oil is very low in the intake, which does not increase cholesterol. Having tomatoes also prevents arteries from being blocked. Anyone who faces an artery blockage should not use more than two-three spoons of ghee or oil throughout the day. It is only right to avoid salt, chillies and fried foods. One should consume fresh green vegetables and fruits in significant proportion in their diet. The biggest thing is to stay away from smoking and alcohol.

To increase the amount of oxygen in the body, to maintain the flow of blood smoothly in the arteries, then there is no better exercise than yoga. The most important yoga exercise is Surya Namaskar, which not only helps keep the arteries healthy by facilitating blood transfusion but is beneficial for other parts of the body. Keep both hands in Anjali Mudra and keep breathing in slowly. Stop breathing for a while and then exhale the inhaled air slowly.

Another such yogasana called Tadasana, which helps remove stress. Stand alone for this and stretch both legs outward. Take both hands up and add to the state of Namaste. Now take a deep breath in and stretch the body. Under ‘Paschimotanasana’, stretch both feet to the front side and while stretching, bend forward. Keep in mind that your knees should not buckle. Try to touch your tip of the nose to the knees and maintain the position with your head kneeling. This posture keeps the pace of beats controlled and the arteries healthy.

Many researchers suggest that lack of sleep is a prime reason for blockage of arteries. In Ayurveda, rest is equally important for a person's diet to stay healthy. It is vital to give the brain and body time to recuperate and regain energy. To ensure this the bedroom should be free of TV, laptop, mobile phone and other such devices while sleeping at night. The room temperature should also be configurable. Wearing comfortable clothes and sleeping at 10 p.m. ensures a deep sleep.
