Quick solutions for dandruff

As scalps get dry and itchy this winter, Dr Arvind Poswal offers some natural solutions

Winter is the best time of the year and most us just can’t contain our excitement to wear our knitted sweaters, leather jackets, scarves and long boots. Snuggling under a blanket and a hot cup of tea or coffee are what most of us crave for while the temperature keeps dipping and the winds get colder. Winters are, of course, the best season but the white flaky scalp and itching that tags along is something all of us want to get rid of—dandruff.

Dandruff is usually caused due to the presence of fungus on the scalp. The existence of the fungus decays the scalp, which results in shedding of the skin. There are also several other reasons for dandruff, such as sedentary lifestyle choices, improper diets and lack of cleanliness of the hair and scalp.

Here are some natural ways to keep dandruff at bay

Apple Cider Vinegar

The acidic nature of the apple cider vinegar helps in preventing dandruff. Its pH level helps in fighting off fungus from the skin and thereby on dandruff as well. It’s anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties help in maintaining a healthy scalp and also removes all dead skin cells. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that calm the scalp against irritation.

You can gently massage apple cider vinegar on your scalp for about 15-20 minutes prior to a hair wash.

Yogurt

Yogurt is rich in multi-vitamins and contains high levels of lactic acid that are very effective to tackle dull and damaged hair. The anti-fungal properties of yogurt help in fighting dandruff thereby, making your hair healthy and strong. It also contains vitamin B5 and proteins which moisturise and condition hair in addition to combating dandruff. Not only this, the antibacterial agents diminish irritation and itchiness from the scalp.

You can gently massage yogurt in your scalp for about 15 minutes prior to hair wash. For best results, apply it twice a week.

Garlic

Garlic is considered to be an excellent natural and herbal remedy for dandruff. It has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and cardio-protective properties which make it fit for its use for this purpose. Garlic is thought to be a superb natural remedy to get rid of this condition as it has high vitamin and mineral content. Garlic also contains Vitamin A, B and C, that provides sustenance and nutrition to the hair and scalp. It prevents scalp infections and the microbes that cause them.

A garlic paste can be made by crushing garlic and mixing it with honey to neutralise the effect. You can gently massage this paste in your scalp for about 15 minutes before the hair wash.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a mild exfoliant that helps in eliminating dead skin. It also condenses the excess oil present on the scalp which in turn reduces the threat of development of dandruff. Baking soda is also known to lessen the fungus that develops dandruff. The use of baking soda helps in production of natural oils that battle dryness from the hair and scalp.

Wet your hair and apply baking soda on your scalp and the length of your hair. Wash off your hair after a minute or so, as baking soda also has properties to dry out your hair.
