High-end beauty products can leave a dent in your pocket. Dr. Shernaz B. Avari tells you how you can get gorgeous-looking skin using simple kitchen ingredients

We all want the radiant skin that we see actors sporting on screen, don’t we? Sadly, not all of us are blessed with a flawless complexion. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to improve the quality of your skin, using simple ingredients that you probably already have — in your kitchen! You may have made skin packs using natural vegetable pulp, fruit and herbs, or even just by mixing in nourishing ingredients such as milk, curd, milk-cream or honey. But, for the most effective packs, you should also add in ground pulses to turn them into an exfoliant, which will help you scrub off dead cells and give your skin a little more life.

MASOOR DAL (PINK LENTILS) FOR NORMAL SKIN
Ingredients

  • 3 tsp masoor dal, soaked overnight
  • 4 almonds, soaked overnight and then peeled
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp coconut milk powder or coconut milk

Method
Mix all the ingredients together and grind them into a paste. Apply this on your face and neck, and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off with tap water, and follow this with splashes of ice cold water.

MASOOR DAL TO COMBAT A TAN
Ingredients

  • 2 tsp masoor dal powder (dry grind)
  • 3 tsp milk
  • 3-4 drops of lime juice

Method
Mix all the ingredients together and make a paste. Apply this on your face and neck, or on any part of your body where you have a tan. Leave it on for half an hour. Wash it off with tap water; and then splash cold water on the affected areas. Apply this pack before you step outdoors.

MASOOR DAL FOR DARK AND DULL FEET
Ingredients

  • ½ cup masoor dal (ground)
  • 2 tbsp almond powder
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tsp glycerine

Method
Mix all the ingredients together into a fine paste. Scrub your feet and leave the paste on, allowing it to dry for 15 minutes.
Then rub your feet with a little more milk and wash the pack off with lukewarm water.

EXFOLIATING BACK SCRUB
Ingredients

  • 1 cup green gram powder
  • 2 tsp sandalwood powder
  • 2 tsp paste of tulsi leaves
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

Method
Mix all the ingredients well. Apply the paste on your back like a mask. Allow it to dry and then rinse it off with water.

FACIAL SCRUB PACK
Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp green gram (ground)
  • 2 tsp chana atta
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • A little buttermilk

Method
Mix all the ingredients together and leave the mixture aside to settle for around an hour. Apply the paste on your face and neck. You can also apply this over black spots and pigmented areas of your skin. Wash it off after 15 minutes. For best results, apply this face pack every day.

GREEN GRAM TO COMBAT ACNE
Ingredients

  • 2 tsp green gram (powdered)
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ¼ tsp sandalwood powder
  • A pinch of clove powder
  • Cucumber paste or water (so that you can make a paste)

Method
Mix all the ingredients together and apply the pack on your face and neck, avoiding the area around your eyes. Wash it off with cold water after 5-10 minutes. Apply this twice a day for best results.

URAD DAL (BLACK GRAM) TO COMBAT ACNE
Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp urad dal (ground)
  • 1 tbsp sandalwood powder
  • A dash of turmeric powder
  • Rose water or curd (so that you can make a paste)

Method
Mix all the ingredients together to form a paste and apply it on your face and neck. Wash it off after around 15 minutes. You can even apply this on your scalp to strengthen your hair and combat problems like alopecia.
