Dear Barbara,

Of late, I have noticed that my skin is oily most of the time. (I am only in my mid twenties!) Due to this, my pores are enlarged and are now visible giving a dull appearance to my face. The excess oil on my skin leaves a shiny and greasy sheen on my face. I have also been facing acne and blemishes, blackheads, white heads and dark spots. Although I wash my face with a good face wash, it seems that everything is going wrong for me. Please help.

Steffi Gonsalves, Bandra

Dear Steffi,

The excess oil on your skin could be due to exposure to the sun as well as unhealthy eating habits. Maintain a healthy diet — eat lots of raw veggies and fruits, and avoid oily and junk food. Always keep your face clean; wash it every two or three hours so that oil doesn’t settle on your skin. This helps to keep away the excessive oiliness and acne. To reduce oiliness, whip an egg white until stiff and spread it on your skin. Allow it to dry before washing it off with lukewarm water. Do this twice a day. High in vitamin A, egg white can effectively dry out skin blemishes as well as tone and tighten your oily skin.

Dear Barbara,

While combing my hair, I’ve observed that I have a dry scalp that is itchy, red and irritated, and it also makes my hair appear dry and dull. Slowly and steadily, I am also losing a few strands of hair and it seems as if I have dandruff. I take good care of my hair, but I have noticed that it has started to turn grey. I am too young for this! Please help.

– Marina Fernandes, Khar

Dear Marina,

A dry scalp could be caused due to eczema, dietary deficiencies and exposure to cold and dry weather or using hair care products that contain alcohol. Another major cause of dry scalp is that sebaceous glands produce less oil and so your scalp isn’t moisturised well. When the production of oil is reduced, the scalp becomes dry, causing redness, itchiness and irritation. To restore the moisture and treat dryness, apply a generous amount of mayonnaise on your scalp and rinse it off with warm water. The vinegar in the mayonnaise will help with any bacterial or fungal infection, which could be a reason for your dry scalp. You can also opt for a warm oil massage as it is the most effective way to restore moisture.
