Dear Barbara,
I am a 23-year-old student and I am experiencing constant acne breakouts on my chin and forehead. I live away from home often resort to and I eat outside food regularly. With every breakout, the acne gets worse, the pimples larger and more painful. It hurts a lot when I touch it. What should I do to prevent this?
– Rani Mitra, Juhu

Dear Rani,
The problem lies in your lifestyle. Acne breakouts are caused either due to the production of excessive heat in the body or because of a hormonal imbalance. Your habits of eating junk food regularly is most likely causing excessive production of heat in your body. To do away with these breakouts, you need to start eating healthy food and incorporate more cooling foods in your diet. Avoid dairy products and don’t touch your face with dirty hands. Soak a cotton ball in rose water and gently dab it on the affected areas to dry up the acne. Do not scratch the acne, or it will leave permanent marks.

Dear Barbara,
I have been waxing my arms and legs since my teenage years, but nowadays I don’t find enough time to go to the salon. I have been considering shaving, but most people say that this is not good for the skin. I have even heard that shaving causes skin darkening and doesn’t allow proper growth of hair follicles, clogging up the pores. Is this a myth or a fact?
– Niharika Kanodia, Kurla

Dear Niharika,
Waxing is an age-old method for hair removal. These new alternatives are not as efficient as waxing. But, shaving is perfectly safe. Ensure that you use a good quality razor to avoid cuts. It’s a myth that shaving causes blackening of skin. It can clog up pores and cause the growth of hard hair, but if you exfoliate using avocado or walnut body scrub twice a week, then it will keep your skin glowing. However, see to it that you don’t shave too often, and always exfoliate before you shave. Choose an option you that are comfortable with.
