Don’t let acne leave you in agony. Gurjyot Kaur tells you about mistakes that make it worse

Acne can be a cause for worry, especially when you find it dotting your face on the morning of an important meeting. Putting on layers of makeup won’t help, and neither will popping it. To keep the terror away, we’re telling you about a few common mistakes that you may be making that almost certainly lead to acne flare-ups.

Mistake No 1 Popping it!

This is the most common mistake and most of us are guilty of having done this at least once. And even though we regret it later, we still turn to this method for temporary relief. However, squeezing pimples can make things worse as the bacteria can get deeper into the skin, leading to scarring and even skin infections. Shikhee Agrawal, head training at The Body Shop India, says, “A pimple is not a balloon. Bursting a pimple like a balloon will irritate or inflame your skin, causing serious swelling, scarring and redness.”

Mistake No 2 Not cleaning your phone

Well, this may sound a bit absurd, but it’s true. Our skin naturally produces sweat and oil, which can get transferred on to our phones when we use them. This stays on our phones and is transferred back to our skin. The transfer of bacteria to oil glands can lead to blemishes and acne.

Mistake No 3 Washing your face frequently

Washing your face is a good thing, right? Not quite! While washing your face is good, it doesn’t ensure acne-free skin. Our skin produces certain oils that are necessary for healthy skin and if there is less of them, our oil glands can go into overdrive, which could lead to acne and breakouts. Shikhee says, “Excess of anything is bad. Opt for a mild cream-based face wash that maintains the pH levels of your skin. It will leave you with moisturised, oil-free, clear skin.”

Mistake No 4 Sleeping with your makeup on

Just as washing your face too often can cause trouble, not washing it enough is bad too. Whether you follow a beauty routine or not, never go to bed with makeup on. This can block pores and make your skin more prone to breakouts. Aakriti Kocchar, hair and makeup expert at Oriflame India, tells us, “Going to bed with your makeup on can cause breakouts. Clean your skin with a mild cleanser first to remove makeup, followed by rinsing with cold water, and then apply a night serum to replenish your skin.”

Mistake No 5 Not using a moisturiser

Many-a-times, people who have oily skin prefer not to apply a moisturiser. Though many of us with oily skin are afraid to use a moisturiser because we believe that it will cause breakouts, this is a myth! Not using moisturiser can lead to dryness, which can lead to acne. If you have oily skin, use a light lotion or serum, but make sure to keep your skin moisturised. Aakriti says, “If your skin is very sensitive and prone to acne, use a moisturiser that contains salicylic acid. It prevents acne and keeps your skin hydrated.”

Fix the problem

Keep your hair clean: Dandruff can lead to acne. Aakriti tells us, “If you have dandruff, then treat it immediately using Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner. Dandruff falls on to your face, causing acne.”

Pick the right cleanser: Shivani Shah, yoga therapist and co-founder of Naturma, says, “Use a gentle foaming cleanser that consists of a few drops of essential oil such as tea tree oil or neem oil. Clean your face at least three times a day to remove dirt, grime and  bacteria.”

Towel taboo: Shikhee says, “Avoid using another person’s towel. This could increase the risk of acne, redness and skin inflammation.”
