As film star Ajay Devgn suffers from a painful tennis elbow, Dr Mudit Khanna explains the symptoms and solutions

What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a painful condition of the elbow caused by inflammation of the tendons on the outside of the elbow at a bony prominence (lateral epicondyle). Tennis elbow is typically an overuse or repetitive strain injury caused by repetitive motions of the wrist and forearm.

How common is it?
Tennis elbow is the most common reason that people see their doctors for elbow pain.

What are the symptoms?
A typical symptom is pain over the outer aspect of the elbow worsened with forearm and wrist activity, such as holding a racquet, turning a wrench, or shaking hands. The dominant elbow is most often affected; however both elbows can be affected. The symptoms of tennis elbow develop gradually and there is usually no specific injury associated with the start of symptoms.

Who is vulnerable? Does it affect those who don't play tennis?
Any person involved in work or recreational activities that requires repetitive and vigorous use of the forearm muscles is vulnerable. People involved in plumbing, weaving, cutting, cooking , painting or almost any other profession or recreational activity that requires repetitive use of the forearm muscles are vulnerable.

What is the treatment?
Treatment typically involves use of anti-inflammatory medications, orthotic bracing and intralesional injections. A promising new treatment for tennis elbow therapy with Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC). GFC for tennis elbow, in particular, is used to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities to restore function and alleviate pain.

How can you prevent it?
It is often difficult to prevent getting tennis elbow. However, not putting strain on the tendons of the elbow will help to avoid the condition or prevent symptoms from getting worse. If tennis elbow is a result of sporting activity like tennis badminton or squash, getting some coaching advice to help improve your technique may help avoid getting tennis elbow. Proper warm-up and gentle stretching  of the involved muscles helps to avoid injury.

Does it tend to recur?
Tennis elbow may recur if the cause is not identified or treatment is inadequate.
