Tuesday, March 13, 2018

There’s no denying that yoghurt is yummy, and it has many health benefits, too. But, it can also be used as a beauty enhancer. Pranika Sharma brings you 10 ways to make the most of the delicious dairy-based heaven-send

To condition hair

Yoghurt works as a scalp and hair conditioner as it helps moisturise the scalp, reducing itchiness and irritation. Massage some unsweetened yoghurt into your scalp and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. This will act as a conditioner for your hair and leave it glossy and shining.

To improve the immune system

The bacteria in yoghurt also help enhance the immune system by producing gamma interferon, a protein that destroys harmful bacteria and viruses. The lactic acid present in yoghurt stops the growth of pathogens in stale food and prevents your body from contracting disease.

As an exfoliating body scrub

Yoghurt is shown to have great cleansing and exfoliating properties. It removes all the dirt and pollution from within the pores of the skin, making it look bright and vibrant. Mix a tablespoon of yoghurt with two tablespoons of gram flour and a few drops of lemon juice. You can use this mixture as an effective face and body scrub for rejuvenated skin.

To boost gut health

Yoghurt is a probiotic. This means that it can help in the growth of good bacteria that breaks down the food in the intestines. Its lactic acid content minimises the growth of bacteria that may cause gastric issues such as acidity and constipation, keeping your gut healthy.

To relieve canker sores

Canker sores are blisters that form in the mouth. They might occur due to the excessive heat produced by your body and cause discomfort. Yoghurt acts as a cooling agent, reducing the heat in the body. Have two servings of yoghurt a day until the sores clear.

To relieve sunburn

No one likes a painful sunburn. It itches and irritates the skin, which can lead to inflammation. To get rid of sunburn, apply yoghurt on to the affected area and let it sit for 20 minutes, before rinsing it off with lukewarm water. Yoghurt cools the skin down and prevents inflammation.

To improve bone health

Yoghurt contains important nutrients such as proteins, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamin D, and all of these nutrients promote bone health. They strengthen your bones and prevent diseases such as osteoporosis in old age.

To promote weight management

High in protein and a natural source of calcium, not only is a cup of yoghurt beneficial for your overall health, but it also aids in weight loss. It works to increase the levels of hormones that reduce appetite.

To treat yeast infection

Yoghurt can be used to maintain vaginal health as it prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and prevents yeast infections in the vagina and urinary tract. Consuming yoghurt on a daily basis will serve as your dose for good vaginal health. You can add cranberries to your yoghurt for added benefits.

To lower cholesterol

Yoghurt contains the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is known to lower cholesterol by decreasing the total low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol — the kind considered bad. The bacteria is known to breakdown accumulated fat molecules, reducing blockages in arteries.
