Sari splendour

Saturday, January 06, 2018

Coming up at Artisans’ at Kala Ghoda is Vinay Narkar with his new collection called Chandrakala that revisits his Maharashtrian sari that was, according to tradition, offered to a new bride after the first Sankranti. According to Narkar, Chandrakala now exist s only in memory with some references in Marathi-Kannada literature. For his research, he travelled to Aundh, Pune and Baroda where the Maharani was wearing a Chandrakala. What you would see at the exhibition from January 11 to 13 would be his interpretation of the Chandrakala using contemporary fabrics like cotton silks, mulberry silks, linen silk and eri silk. For the traditional designs, Narkar works with mainly black and white colours. His contemporary designs are primarily done in black, white, grey and pastel shades. An offshoot of the traditional designs he has experimented with is recreating the saris in the paintings of Ravi Verma. Looks good!
