A pick of films set around New Year—romance, comedy, crime and even horror

1) The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

In Ronald Neame classic disaster movie, with Gene Hackman heading the star-studded cast, a passenger ship, on a New Year cruise, is hit by a tidal wave and turns turtle. A priest tries to help a small band of survivors get out alive.
2) New Year’s Evil (1980)

In Emmet Alston’s slasher movie, during a New Year's Eve celebration, a Los Angeles disc jockey (Roz Kelley) receives a phone call saying that when New Year's strikes in each time zone, a “naughty girl” will be murdered--and she will be the last to die.
3)  Trading Places  (1983):

The John Landis comedy starred Dan Ackroyd as the well-off stock brokerm and Eddie Murphy as a poor hustler, who, are manipulated by a pair of rich men, into trading places for their own amusement. On New Year’s eve, the two pawns and their pals get their revenge.
4)  When Harry Met Sally (1989):

Undoubtedly, one of best romantic films of all time, Harry and Sally, who have been friends for years, discover they are actually in love.  Harry finally tells her his feelings, in that classic line:  “It's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve, I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” Rob Reiner directed, Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan starred.
5)  New Year’s Day (1989):

In this Harry Jaglom film, a Holywood writer returns to his sublet apartment hoping to find it empty, but is still occupied by the tenants, three young women who have thrown a New Year’s party. Milos Forman and David Duchovny make an appearance.
6)  Four Rooms (1995):

This anthology film, directed by the then new filmmakers Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez, and Quentin Tarantino, is set in a hotel on New Year’s even, when a hapless bellboy (Tim Roth) tries to keep the chaos under control. Look out for Madonna, Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas amidst the crowd.

7)  The Money Train (1995):

A pair of squabbling adopted brothers played by Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson, who are also cops, who get involved in a New Year's eve heist on train laden with money. The hilarious film, directed by Joseph Ruben, also starred Jennifer Lopez.
8)  200 Cigarettes (1999):

Back to back stars in Risa Bramon Garcia’s film, contemplate relationships, loneliness, desire at New Year time. Ben and Casey Affleck, Courtney Love, Christina Ricci, Kate Hudson can be spotted in the crowd.
9)  New Year's Eve (2010)

In Gary Marshall’s romantic comedy revolving around New Year’s eve, several stories criss-cross and the line-up of stars includes Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Sara Jessica Parker and many others.

10) New Year’s Day (2010):
In this Suri Krishnamma film, two teenagers decide to take their own lives in the new year, after they have completed twelve dangerous tasks set by their friends, who were killed in a school tragedy.
