The Fate Of The Furious
Director:
F. Gary Gray
Cast: Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron and others
Rating: * * * ½

The Fast And The Furious franchise is showing no signs of running out of fuel. The films just keep getting bigger, the action furious-er. The eighth in the series, 'The Fate Of The Furious' has a new director in F. Gary Gray and a deadly new villain—Charlize Theron. Hollywood seems to be clearing the ‘negative’ space a little for women of a certain age, which may be a good thing or bad, depending on each one’s perspective.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) has finally married Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), and is on his honeymoon in Cuba, when Cipher (Theron), a kind of cyber warrior, strikes to teach the world a lesson. She also blackmails Dominic to work with her, against his friends. Then the US covert operations boss, Mr Nobody (Kurt Russell) persuades Dom’s team into working for him, which involves Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) helping spring the hated Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) out of prison.

For a F&F movie (the first without the late Paul Walker), there’s too much plot and complication—and some plot devices are from the older films- but fans should not complain, since, the action is insanely spectacular, the chases and bust-ups elaborately created and executed. Even if the last movie’s car zoom from skyscraper to skyscraper is absolutely memorable, there are stunts here to almost top that—in one scene cars rain down into the street. Gray even brings in a nuclear sub in the Arctic, and what they do there is wow-worthy.

Vin Diesel always sprinkles some humour into all that macho muscle-flexing (there’s that too)-- Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Ludacris) help out there--and even though the lines are mostly functional and often cheesy, they are good for a few laughs between the bashes and crashes. Look out for a cameo from a fabulous female star (no, not Deepika Padukone), while you sit back to enjoy the ride. This franchise delivers exactly what it promises and ensures that it isn’t going away for a long time.
