Things parents should know before going for parent-teacher meetings

Wednesday, November 07, 2018

Instead of getting anxious about PTAs, parents should keep in mind certain things before attending them. Lina Ashar, Founder of Kangaroo Kids Education Ltd, elucidates

Let’s start with the definition of parent teacher meetings: A parent-teacher conference, parent-teacher interview, parent-teacher night or parents' evening, is a short meeting or conference between the parents and teachers of students to discuss a child's progress at school and find solutions to academic or behavioral problems if any. As the definition states, a parent teacher meeting is essentially held so that the teacher can meet the parents personally and share the feedback of their child on their performance for that period. The teacher shares positive points, areas where the parents need to focus on to improve the child’s performance. Suggestions on the child’s passion and ways to help them purse them.

Most parents are fear going for a parent teacher meeting as they are anxious of their child’s progress and expect only the worst. But you must remember- if you are invited to a conference, it doesn't mean your child is in trouble! Teachers try to meet with all parents. You and the teacher both want the very best for your child. You can help your child by working together as a team.

Here are a few tips parents can follow when going for a parent teacher meeting:
Before the meeting:

1    Speak to you child about school
2    Check with them whether they are enjoying school
3    Make a list of things you would like to talk about with the teacher
4    Check with your child if there is any thing specific they would like the parent to discuss with the teacher.

During the Meeting:
1    Be on time
2    Ask the important questions first
3    Be a good listener and listen to the feedback the teacher is giving,
4    Parents should be open to the feedback the teacher gives, the teacher only has the best intention in mind for the kind, parents should not try and defend the child
5    Ask the teacher ways in which they can help their child improve at home
6    Always thank the teacher for the efforts they take to help the child learn in the best way possibke

After the Meeting:
1    Speak to your child and share the positive feedback received
2    Congratulate them for their achievement
3    Share the feedback shared by the teacher,
4    Share the road may you and their teacher has defined for them
5    Keep in touch with the teacher on and off

At the end of the day parents should not compare their child’s performance to any other child’s... the conclusion for this is children learn differently some are auditory, some visual and some are kinaesthetic learners, it is important for parents to understand this and teach them the activities accordingly. This will help the kids learn faster and the information will be retained for a long time.
