Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

My son is studying B.Com from LMU  College of Commerce. He wants to go to the US for pursuing a Master's Degree in Management. Can he apply for admission with a 3-year undergraduate degree?
-Mrinalini Sharma

Most colleges in the US require 4 years Undergraduate degree for admission to their Post Gradauate programs. It basically means a minimum of 16 years of formal education. A few colleges may allow 3 years Undergraduate degree if it has been completed in an Honours Program. Some colleges may accept a 3 years degree on a case-to-case basis based on the WES evaluation. Applicants with only a 3-year bachelor's degree do not meet the requirement for admission and are not as competitive compared to candidates with 4-year degrees. Therefore, to be competitive, applicants would need to complete a Master's degree (2 years after your bachelor's degree) or other acceptable degree. Most students applying for post graduation in the US continue with an M.Com degree in India to complete 16 years of formal education.

My daughter says that she wants to study Environmental Engineering in the USA. I have not heard about this program. Can you please explain what is Environmental Engineering and what type of work is done by environmental engineers?
-Anuja Lalbhai

Environmental engineers are also called ecological engineers. Environmental engineering combines science and engineering for improving our natural environment, reducing pollutants and providing better quality of air, water and land which is more suited for human consumption. Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. They are involved in efforts to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control. They also address global issues, such as unsafe drinking water, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

Environmental engineers have a broad spectrum of scope of work. Specific areas of work include:

  • Design and evaluation of erosion control systems
  • Systems and processes for management and utilisation of wastes
  • Design and management of water control systems
  • Monitoring of air quality, air emission measurement and air pollution
  • Hazardous Waste Management
  • Designing systems for municipal and industrial water supplies
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Studying environmental impact of proposed construction projects
  • Environmental management

I am interested in studying Bachelors of Business Administration at University of California-Berkeley and Los Angeles. What is the process of application?
-Timsy Parekh

The application for Undergraduate studies to the University of California is done through the University of California application website. The application period is between November 1 and November 30. When you apply to UC, you are required to report your academic record within the UC application. Transcripts are not required at the time of application. The UCs do not require any recommendation/reference letter. You also need to submit your SAT or ACT score along with your English Proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS) score. A very important part of the UC application is the essays that are released in September.
