Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

I have completed my ISC Board Grade XII exams. Though my aggregate percentage is 82%, I’ve scored only 67% in Maths. I am interested in applying for Economics to the UK. Am I eligible to apply?
- Praveen Shukla

The most important part of your UK Undergraduate application is your Grade XII result. For most programs, an aggregate 82% is a good score. However, most Economics based programs will require Higher Grades in Maths to be eligible for application. There are several colleges in the UK in which Students who have achieved between 60% - 75% (Central Board) or 65% - 80% (State Boards) may be considered for entry onto the Foundation Programmes.  Alternatively, please send an email to your university asking for a confirmation of their requirements.

My daughter is interested in applying for Undergraduate studies to University of California.  I know that the UC’s don’t use the commonapp. How does the UC Application system work?
- Kartik Shrivastava

The University of California (UC) have an independent application portal:

The deadline for application to the UC’s is November 30th. As a part of your application, you will need:

Unofficial Transcripts: Though you don't need to submit your transcripts to UC at the time of your application, but you will need to refer to them as you fill out the application to ensure the information you enter is accurate.

Test Scores: SAT/ACT scores as well as any SAT Subject Tests, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate you may have taken.

Essay prompts that are released in September every year.

Letters of recommendation: You should not submit letters of recommendation for the UC application. However, some campuses/majors may require letters of recommendation as part of a supplemental application review.

My daughter is studying in Grade XII in CBSE Board. His main subjects are Maths, Physics and Chemistry. She wants to study Architecture in the US. What will she require for application?
- Raveena Panchal

The Undergraduate Architecture in the US is known as the B. Arch program. Application to the B. Arch program consists of a basic undergraduate application along with the Architecture school application which has the Portfolio Requirements.  The Basic Undergraduate Application consists of:

Online Application & Fees
Official Transcripts
Three Academic Recommendation Letters
SAT/ACT score

A portfolio is like a personal statement about your visual training, interest, aspirations and you. The Portfolio requirements are College-Specific. Each college will have specific requirements as a part of their Portfolio submission. It should include:

  • a brief statement outlining your interest in the field of architecture
  • 12-24 high-quality reproductions of your best

Some colleges may also need your Portfolio to be labelled in the following way:

  • Information on the medium used
  • Whether the project was done independently or in a class
  • The original size of the work
  • A one- or two-sentence comment about each piece
