Alisha Mashruwala is a Partner at OnCourse and a Harvard graduate, and is also a Psychology major with a minor in Economics

I am planning to do my PhD in mathematics education. I have completed M.Sc. and M.Ed. I am planning to take IELTS exam in August. Can you suggest universities in the US for the same?
—Suchita Sharma

The best universities for a PhD program in mathematics in the US are:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Harvard University, Stanford University, University of California—Berkeley, University of Chicago and California Institute of Technology to name a few. However, an admission to these universities is highly competitive. Please note that GRE General Test as well as GRE Mathematics Subject test scores will be needed as a part of your application.

My son has given his Board exams in 2017. Though he attended college in 2017 and even 2018, he was unable to do well due to health issues. Is it possible for him to apply to the US as a Freshman application?
—Anuja Divawala

It is possible for your son to consider a Freshman Gap Year Application. The Freshman Gap Year Application is similar to the Freshman Application to the US. Along with the usual requirements like: Transcripts, Recommendation Letters and Personal Essay, he will have to write an extra essay which talks about the reason of the “Gap” in his education. At this stage, please ensure that you express his health issues along with other relevant issues/problems that may have caused him to delay his application. Also, please don’t submit any college transcripts as a part of the application.

I’ve completed my BA with Psychology. My parents are encouraging me to study Masters in Political Science in the UK. Can you recommend some good colleges as well as what will be required for admissions?
—Aadarsh Shrivastava

The most popular colleges for Political Science in the UK are- University of Oxford, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Cambridge, Kings College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Warwick and Durham University. Your application will be considered on its academic merit. Admissions to the Political Science program are very competitive and international students will need to obtain at least 70 per cent of the available marks in the final year examinations. Most programs will not ask for a GMAT/GRE score for application, though you will require a good IELTS score.
