Role of education in revolutionizing the fashion industry

The textile and clothing sector is one of the oldest sectors in our country. The industry is known for its cultural heritage, elegance, beauty and colorfulness. According to IBEF report, this industry employs over 45 million directly and over 60 million people indirectly. This shows the importance of the sector in our growth of GDP.

The glamour factor has caught on today, making young women and men want to emulate the designer wear of Bollywood and Hollywood celebrities. India is proud to have hundreds of fashion designers who are peddling designs and wares. Some of them have even managed to expand into international markets. They are successful because they are continuously innovating and diversifying their style.

Here, education comes to picture. The dynamics of the industry keep changing and to keep oneself abreast with it is important. Education helps in understanding the designs and the patterns that are in trend and are prevalent in the market. 1    Make the right contacts early on
Keep a track of paid/ unpaid internships while you are still a student. Its much easier to land a job with a recommendation rather than trying to convince people. Thus, start meeting and building relations with people from the industry as early as possible.  

2    Develop a business oriented mindset
Business and marketing skills are essential to promote any business. Along with the skill set that one develops, also understanding where to buy the fabric from at which price and whom to sell it to, is also important. Hence, develop your business skills when you are a student.

3    Decide on your niche in the industry
One needs to decide which branch of the industry works best for them. They need to figure out whether they want to get into accessories designing or sportswear designing or garment designing for kids, women or men, etc. The various jobs that you can choose from are -- Fashion designer, Photo shoot consultant, fashion journalist, fashion consultant, brand manager and merchandiser.
