The dynamic nature of radiology has undergone tremendous changes over last few decades. In layman terms, a radiologist is a specialised medical doctor who has knowledge in performing and interpreting diagnostic imaging tests, along with carrying out interventional procedures or treatments, using equipments like X-ray, Ultrasound, CT, MR etc. Their medical expertise helps other doctors and specialists in conducting proper diagnosis for the patients. Radiology as a profession has expanded dramatically with the development of new imaging technologies and new applications, hence making it an important element in delivering proper clinical diagnosis to the patients.

With advancement in the medical and healthcare technologies, radiology is becoming one of the most sorted career options. The profession offers varied possibility in Healthcare delivery, Teaching and Research, thus making it a lucrative career option for budding specialists. As a cornerstone for diagnosis and treatment, radiology is a great field to get in.

A radiologist begins his / her education with MBBS Degree in a medical school followed by DMRD, MD Radiodiagnosis, DNB Radiodiagnosis etc which are some of the speciality courses on Radiology in India. Courses like Interventional Radiology, Neuro Radiology etc are available for Super Specialisation.

Radiology as a Career
Typically, a Radiologist's day-to-day job entails interpreting information gathered through various imaging techniques, discussing results with doctors and patients, writing medical reports, and explaining treatment and alternatives to patients. The working life of a radiologist is varied depending upon the work set-up. So, a radiologist working in a small hospital or diagnostic centre usually provides a service across the whole of the specialty, often involving most of the available imaging techniques. But in larger centres, Radiologists are expected to focus in a specific clinical area and may have to work exclusively with selected clinical subspecialties. There is also option to become Interventional Radiologists in which case the procedures are not only diagnostic but also therapeutic.

Although Radiology has a huge potential in terms of career, it is important that Radiologists should be careful to protect themselves from over exposure to radiation as it may lead to a multitude of severe health effects. Skin redness, hair loss, radiation burns, acute radiation syndrome etc. are some of the effects of over exposure to radiations faced by the radiologist. Use of appropriate radiation protection apparel such as Aprons, Gloves, Protective Eyewear etc., is essential to reduce the exposure to radiations.

On the other side, Radiology is also a challenging occupation. With increase in Population and increase in diseases that require Radiology equipments to diagnose, there is a huge demand for radiologists in the country. Also, Radiologists need to be updated regularly on latest developments in technology leading to newer possibilities in Diagnosis through existing and upcoming Imaging technologies.

Radiologists with their valuable knowledge in various imaging technologies provide the necessary information to the Specialists which help them to arrive at a conclusive diagnosis for both Non-Emergency & Critical Care scenarios which makes their skill set an indispensable one in the Healthcare Delivery.
