Model and actor Freddy K Daruwala speaks to Monarose Sheila Pereira about his journey in a dynamic profession

Why did you choose your career?
I was looking for newer challenges and growth and I found that one opportunity leads to another. I am a bit of a risk taker in-life and thankfully don’t get to stuck up on my limitations and found that when I tried out acting it was a place I saw exponential growth and loved.

What is your work profile?
After getting into the industry, I realized that I need to keep my profile very simple. I am a model and an actor. But to make me able to perform I hire a team of experts to ensure I can perform optimally

What investment did you have to make?
As an actor there are tons of investments. The general investments will be having an aggressive management team to find you the roles you dream to play. An excellent PR team to package you and get you closer to fans and a team that works on your aesthetics. I keep up with my fitness 365 days out of the year with the exception of Sundays, so I additionally have a team of trainers and coaches to work on my body, from a sports therapist to a chiropractor. There definitely is an investment but if you get the right team it feels more like an extended family.

Where does your income come from? Can your career sustain you or do you need to supplement it?
My income primarily comes from my profession as an Actor, however, my MBA has also taught me to have a diversified portfolio ensuring that I don’t put myself or my family in a situation where they would feel the lack of financial comfort.

What are the advantages in your field?
One of the greatest advantages in being in actor is to be able to connect to millions of people worldwide and evoke an emotion. I had done an independent film and during the screening saw grown men crying in my final monologue and that was a remarkable feeling. Another advantage is that you also leave your legacy. Being shot in front of a camera captures you in time and I am looking forward for my generations to come to see me in those roles.

What are the difficulties in your field?
There are difficulties being an actor, but when I talk to my friends in other industries it is clear that all individuals face similar challenges. One distinguishing fact of being a public figure is constantly being under the scrutiny of your fans. It is though a double-edged sword because it is the fans that also give us the name, fame and game to keep pushing forward.

What advice do you have for those who want to take up your profession?
For those looking to enter acting, here are a few things I wish someone would have told me.

#1: This industry is purely a mental game. You need to have A LOT of mental and emotional stamina if you want to be successful.
#2: Actors are NOT made over-night.
#3: This industry is very dynamic and can be unforgiving so it is important that when you take work you are 100% confident of why you wanted to do this.
