Wednesday, July 11, 2018

By Dr. Rajendra Kumar Joshi, founder of Bhartiya Skill Development University, Jaipur

Times have gone when students just complete graduation and progress on to join private jobs and make career. Nowadays it has become very tough for students to get jobs which can offer “career”. Seeing this normalcy, students are most concerned about designing their career with most latest and in trend courses. Students are looking for colleges and universities which offer the latest set of machines for myriad of courses from all around the globe with training simultaneously in industry.

There are so many trades where vocational courses are offered, some of them are namely: Electrical skills, Carpentry Skills, Construction skills, AI and networking Skills, IoT and embedded skills, manufacturing skills, automotive skills, HVAC skills, etc. Vocational universities nowadays are taking major leap towards technology and it will lead the future of education.  The new ways of hybrid learning are practiced on most efficient machines as machines are not only limited to manufacturing but a lot of programming.  Smart education is changing the dimensions of education where skill based universities are trying to fill the skill gap between industry and education.

Difference between plain graduation degree and a vocational degree
A plain graduation degree offers student nothing more than just theoretical knowledge upon chosen subject where major stumbling block becomes lack of practical knowledge of working in an industry and the skill gap.  At the end of tenure of vocational degree, it not only offers a valid graduation degree but also offers in depth practical knowledge of working on machines and practical working experience of an industry as the courses are designed in such a way that students spend equal amount of time in theoretical learning and practical learning.

Furthermore, if the graduation is just for the purpose of competing for administrative jobs, vocational graduation degree allows you to do that.  It has multiple exit points as well which enables students to leave the course in between and join a good industry if they are having any hands-on offer and come back when they are next due for their promotion.
