A proprietary statistical model to map the results of students

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

'Learning Outcomes'. a continuous measure that defines expected standards in each area of learning, aiming at monitoring students' performance and development periodically to enhance their potential and make them future ready. Here, the students' all round development is measured with metrics and monitored consistently to bring about maximum impact through learning outcomes of every single child. Rajeev Katyal, the Country Director of Global Indian International School (GIIS), interacts with Aishwarya R. Iyer regarding the use and methodologies of learning outcomes

What happens in these learning outcomes?
The unique 7S Analysis measures the in-depth and continual assessment of academic performance of each student in the campus. It is a proprietary statistical model which is a pre-emptive evaluation tool. This helps to map the results of students in all spheres of learning and on the basis of the analysis, the teachers evaluate and execute action plans to ensure that every child is taken to the next level of competency.

The assessments are differentiated and graded in such a way to measure the students’ potential against the learning outcomes. The data received is used  to enhance student achievement and also acts as a learning tool for the educators to improve the curriculum motivating them to create more challenging tasks.

Is it the need of the hour or is it really required for a long run?
With disruptive technology and artificial intelligence beating humans in this constantly evolving world, introducing learning outcomes in early childhood can have bigger return on investment than almost any other educational intervention. The need to innovative learning methods is crucial as India continues to gain prominence in the global diaspora in the current century.

The methodical framework assists in enhancing scores on an average by 10% to 15% of each individual student at GIIS.

How did it all start, where was the seed planted?
Instituted with the mission of providing quality education, Global Indian International School (GIIS) made its beginning in 2002. Today, GIIS' campuses are recognized for their hallmark initiatives in educational excellence, environment conservation, peace and value-based education, and community integration.
We started with Learning Outcomes since the very beginning of setting up our institute. It is a practice that is being followed right from the launch of the GIIS campus in Singapore, slowly expanding to all the 20 campuses eventually in India and abroad. Learning outcomes is practiced to create activities or lesson plans that would be able to bring out an expected rate of success as a result of that learning activity. The methodical framework assists in enhancing scores on an average by 10% to 15% of each individual student at GIIS. GIIS has, so far won 72 awards, nationally and internationally, for providing excellence in education and developing innovative learning methods like Learning Outcomes.

Does this involve the state board as in Maharashtra, till today, the majority of students goes by the state board education pattern.
The Indian government is pushing the agenda of providing skilsets to the Indians to be market-ready. The Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley in his Budget 2017-18 emphasized on the need for measuring learning outcomes. The Union government is also set to devise a method to measure learning outcomes of children at school level; emphasis will be given on science education and flexibility in curriculum to promote creativity through local innovative content.

I’m sure that state board is moving gradually in that direction under the guidance of these directives and this will surely be a key practice followed by all boards in the next few years.

This is such a huge idea and organization. Have you thought about collaborating with the government for wider support and benefits?
As a leading global educational institutional with strong presence in India we continue to have constructive dialogue with policy makers and governments to enhance the Indian educational system.

We are always open to working with various authorities and governments to bring about a positive change in the education sector in the country.
