Will Nepal move away from China?

Saturday, May 12, 2018

Addressing a big gathering in Nepal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that  India and Nepal have similar culture and vision. He also said that the two countries have similar traditions. There are historic links which have remained through the years. This is the third time Modi has visited Nepal for a stay of two days. Modi's visit follows China's attempts to gain a big foothold in Nepal. China is nowhere compared to India with regard to links with Nepal. Sri Rama's wife Janaki is from Nepal which has many other historic links.

Nepal wants big assistance and how much can China give. China has already has given huge financial assistance. And now, Nepal  wants more assistance in many other areas. Only a few weeks ago, China asked for a corridor through Nepal's territory to India. China has given massive financial assistance to Nepal and is prepared to give much more.

Prime Minister of Nepal Oli who received Modi warmly also pointed out the close historic links between India and Nepal and the close culture and traditions and the vision of Nepal and India.

What we should try to do is to give more to Nepal and stop its dependence on China. It is not easy to do this. China sees great possibility in increasing its hold over Nepal. It will not be easy for India to persuade Nepal to move as much as possible from China. In his two-day stay, Modi will try his best to get this done.
