NEITHER Mulayam Singh Yadav nor his son Akhilesh Yadav has withdrawn from the bicycle race. Both of them presented their case to the Election Commissioner in Delhi. Mulayam claimed, as the president of the Samajwadi Party, final authority. Akhilesh claims that he has the majority support in the party. And they are saying that the bicycle is their poll symbol. Mulayam Singh tells his son he is doing illegal things. For instance, Akhilesh has occupied the party office. And the holding of the convention in Lucknow was illegal.
Both the factions in the party appear to be certain about their chances of being recognised as the legal party. Both of them are asking the Election Commissioner his verdict. What will that be? What can that be? It looks like a split in the Samajwadi Party is unavoidable. Both Mulayam Singh Yadav and son Akhilesh have hardened their stand and both are fighting hard to keep the bicycle. The old guard continues to have considerable support. Young Akhilesh too gets the approval of some of committee members.
The split will lead to the weakening of the Samajwadi Party. The leaders are aware of it but they are finding it difficult to stop the split.
Another matter to be considered is the subject regarding the poll alliance. Will Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi continue to be ready to form an alliance with a split party? Evidently, he is waiting fo the final opinion of the Election Commissioner. It looks like, in case a split occurs, the bicycle, the election symbol will go to Mulayam Singh Yadav.
