Throw out the old boldly

Thursday, November 08, 2018

Must we accept and preserve all the ancient customs and knowledge? When the court throws out some ancient law or custom, some bring objections. Whatever is ancient is good and beneficial. It is wrong to drop ancient customs and beliefs. The present can never be as good as the past. We make a big mistake when courts throw out some action based on ancient beliefs. The circumstances in which dwelling on the past can be quite different. The entire surroundings can be different. There are developments which we could not have visualised.

The important thing is the validity of change. Circumstances and thoughts keep changing. New realities emerge and new thoughts and action became necessary. There should be no compunction to throw away belief that is outdated. We must readily change with the times.

When problems related to these issues emerge, we must waste no time in accepting the new. Usually there are objections from some quarters. We must boldly reject the old and go for the new.

The Sabarimala happening shows us the problem. The court has given a bold verdict. There can be no going back. The modern opinion must prevail. The old must be rejected. This one restriction like keeping out women aged between 10 and 50 out of Sabarimala shrine must be thrown out. There is bound to be a conflict of views between the old and the new, but the former must be boldly thrown out.
