The killers may come back

Friday, July 14, 2017

IT is better late than never: It was a big mistake that the route to Amarnath was not watched properly by the security forces and that perhaps was why pilgrims could be killed by terrorists. Those who survived have not given up their pilgrimage.

It is clear that there should have been security arrangements throughout the route along which pilgrims walk to Amarnath. This was not done the last time the pilgrims went. The pilgrims themselves would not give up the journey, come what may. They would rather die than give up the pilgrimage.

When the pilgrims go again, security arrangements are likely to be better but still not adequate. It is stated that in places like Dudsooha militants are hiding. It is clear that there will be one more killing by the terrorists if the entire route is completely and properly not covered by security men. The state government might make an extra effort and even try to get some army men along the route. It is a shame that Kashmiris who for years have facilitated smooth pilgrimage have let down the Amarnath pilgrims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should involve himself in making safe arrangements for the pilgrimage to Amarnath whenever it takes place. If not heinous, he will get another "bloody" attack from Rahul Gandhi.
