Pak army now for peace

Monday, September 11, 2017

THERE appears to be a big change with regard to Pakistan army's stand on war and peace. Pakistan has always been an arrogant and aggressive force – always issuing challenges and threats to India. All their army chiefs were talking tough and even threatening armed intervention in Kashmir. The army chiefs held discussions with Chinese military and made India conclude they would be together in the event of any conflict.

There appears to be a change in the attitude of the Pakistan army chiefs. One of the reasons for this is perhaps the moving closer between China and India. The Chinese president and India's prime minister are appearing to be coming closer. China wants to end conflict with India. The heads of the two states had discussions on many issues an as a result seem to have found it is better to go for trade and peace.

The army in Pakistan no longer finds itself pitted against the civilian government. After the exit of Nawaz Sharif in Pakistan, the army appears to be playing a different role. It has shed its aggressive role and seems to have settled for peace in a big way. It wants to play a role in the settlement of Kashmir’s dispute, but it wants this to be done in a peaceful way.

Pakistan wants to shed the world’s terror tag and be recognised as a country where there is peace, goodwill and democracy.
