Mamata losing popularity

Saturday, January 12, 2019

BJP President Amit Shah's continuing attack on Mamata Banerjee party in Bengal seems to be paying off. Two MPs Sourmitra Khan and Anupam Hazra have deserted her party and eight more are expected to leave anytime now. Her party has been cracking even as she was engrossed in 'ghatabandan' and such other activities outside the state. It is a surprise that she has not been able to see the threat to her party from mainly the BJP and the Congress. She was thought of as being secure in her seat as the chief minister of Bengal. Outside India, there was an impression that she was a popular chief minister and that she would be able to hold off any challenge. Evidently she was under a misapprehension. She was steadily losing power and popularity.

One of the reason for this might be her diminishing care of her own state and interest in various matters outside the state. Her interest in 'ghatabandan' was total. She was one of the top leaders who directed the 'ghatabandan' movement. She was deeply involved in organising unity among opposition parties. She was outside the state most of the time, engaged in the work of 'ghatabandan' which seems to have failed to take off. There appears to be a compelling itch in her to become a national leader. It was during the 'ghatabandan' that the BJP President Amit Shah moved in. That members of parliament from various parties are leaving the Trinamool Congress show the gradual decline of her party in Bengal. The cracks had shown and Mamata Banerjee should have moved and corrected the situation. She has still and not given up 'ghatabandan'. On its failure in the elections, her power in the state is likely to go.
