Lawmakers with criminal record

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

QUITE a large number of criminals under trial are sitting as MPs and MLAs in Parliament and assemblies. The criminals have a say in the passing of bills and rules. The alleged criminal has a say in laying down your behaviour patterns. There are some 1,765 criminal cases of MPs and MLAs which are facing trial in 3,095 cases.

How did they get there? MPs and MLAs facing criminal trials is a bit disturbing. Should criminals be allowed to contest elections? A candidate who has a clean record must be on the electoral roll. That we have as much as 36 per cent of all MPs and MLAs is a matter for worry.

Today 36 per cent of all MPs and MLAs are facing criminal cases. Many of those who make laws are being tried. As any as 248 cases of lawbreakers are in Uttar Pradesh. UP leads in criminal cases in the country among parliamentarians and assemblies.

The big question arises: How can lawmakers against whom there are criminal cases be allowed to lead the country?

Most people in the country do not know perhaps that quite a few MPs and MLAs have criminal cases against them. This fact must be publicised. People must know there are quite a large number of undertrial MPs and MLAs. The question whether they must continue must be taken up. And it must be debated and settled whether people with criminal records should be allowed to contest elections.
