'Gau kalyan cess'

Thursday, January 10, 2019

THE Uttar Pradesh  excise minister has no say against the imposition of the "cow tax". Obviously the chief minister Yogi Adityanath wants five per cent imposition of the "Gau kalyan cess". In the end, the voice of the chief minister will prevail. The excise minister has to do what he says unless he wants to go against the wishes of the chief minister. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath does not mind those who drink in the state but they have to pay more because of the cow kalyan tax.

Why should he have come down heavily on those who drink in the state? Why should he have made liquor more costly? Was there no other source of tax? Why must he have picked alcohol users for the imposition of the tax? He is opposed to the use of liquor. He is opposed to the intake of liquor.

How is he going to deal with his excise minister now? Will he sack him if he opposes the cow kalyan tax? Why did the chief minister impose an order on him? He may or may not be for the cow kalyan cess. Why should he have wanted to collect money from his department? The excise minister has publicly announced the cow kalyan tax, money for which will be collected from the excise collections.

All these years, thousands of families have kept cows in their own homes until they were able to give milk. Nobody kept them after they stopped conceiving and giving milk after delivering calves. They were not killed but were turned away. This was not considered cruel. Nobody wants to keep a cow after it stops delivering milk. The situation we have here is practical, hard.

The cow is a most useful animal and in our own interest requires special treatment. Is it fair that a cow should be killed the moment it stops producing milk? It produces milk for its own calves and not for us. We steal the milk and starve the cows and calves, by stealing most of its milk. Man does "kalyan" to himself and not so much to cows.
