Wise words

Friday, January 12, 2018

Trust the Dalai Lama to come up with some wonderful words of wisdom. Religion, he says, is a private matter and it should not become an excuse to mobilize people against each other.

In these times of heightened religious tension, one would do well to reflect upon the Dalai Lama’s words.

He also cautioned that nationalism could lead to narrow mindedness. This is particularly true today, when nationalism is being used as a bogey to whip up passions and make people feel like criminals if they don’t fall in line with some narrow-minded definition of nationalism.

Just because you wear western clothes and learn English does not mean you are any less patriotic an Indian. Surely there are more important things in the world to focus on?

Global welfare and humanity, says the Dalai Lama, should be our priority instead of nationalism and religious bigotry. No wonder he is lauded the world over for his compassion and foresight. How your Diarist wishes his words are taken to heart and put into practice by everyone in India.
