Tough nut!

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

Vasundhara Raje Scindia is one tough nut to crack! The Rajasthan Chief Minister has taken a firm stand on not allowing the retitled Padmavat to the screened in her state.

Whilst many may find this stance regressive and undemocratic, Chief Minister Raje realizes that for Rajasthanis, Rani Padmini (or Padmavati) wasn’t just a queen. She was a goddess who epitomized the honour of Rajasthan. To have her portrayed as a Bollywood character, going “ghoomar-ghoomar” in some song and dance sequence, is deeply hurtful.

While filmmakers do have the right to make films they believe in, the audience has an equal right to not watch films they don’t believe in.

So let us not get all weepy for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. You win some, you lose some. If Rajasthan will not screen Padmavat, so be it. It’s everybody’s democracy after all! A filmmaker’s freedom and right of expression cannot be absolute; a hurt audience also has a right to accept or reject a film. Time out!
